Spidey’s fans speak out
By Robert W. Welkos
For Sony Pictures Entertainment, the decision to jettison director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire and go in a new direction with “Spider-Man 4″ in 2012 is all well and good, but how are the fans reacting to the studio’s decision? We took a look on the message board at spidermancrawlspace.com and found some interesting fan reax:
From stillnerd:
“Okay, just…wow.
“I realize that Spider-Man 3 sucked, and I was pretty iffy about Tobey Maquire coming back to replay the role of Peter Parker given he’d be in his mid-thirties. But as a film franchise, I wouldn’t say the Spider-Man movies warranted a reboot/overhaul/re-imagining on the level of the Hulk and Batman movies. On one hand, there’s the possibility we could get a much more ‘faithful’ adaptation of Spidey even closer to his comic book counterpart, but at the same time, it’s going to be really, REALLY hard for whoever the poor guy who ends up directing this film to live up to what Sam Raimi accomplished in the first two Spider-Man films.”
From rpgdreamers:
“This is dumb. A reboot would only make sense if there’s been a many years pass since the last franchise like the Batman movies. It’s only been 3 movies, make no sense to reboot again back to high school day like the first Spider-Man movie. This is like BND for the movie. I don’t want to watch another retelling of his origin and school days again.
“Not sure what the problem is but if it was because of Sam Raimi than replace him. He’s good but not so great that he can’t make errors and sucky movies. Spider-Man 3 wasn’t great but it wasn’t totally awful too.”
From webswinger3000:
“This is insane.
“I kinda have mixed feelings about it though.
“I always felt that Toby Maguire didn’t seem to make a good Peter Parker, plus the films were always too kid friendly.
It’s ridiculous to reboot it so quick however, but then again, maybe the new film will be better than the old original three.
“However,if it’s not?
“Then they are idiots and rebooted this for nothing.”
From George Berryman:
“It’s down to a lack of originality – we’re seeing that in film and in comics now.
“How many ‘remakes’ and ‘reimaginings’ have we been subjected to recently – with yet more to come? Sometimes they work (Star Trek) and sometimes they fail so hard it becomes challenging to measure the fail (the new Halloween movies). Why bother coming up with something new when we can have “Pettycoat Junction 2.0?
“Rather than come up with new ideas to breathe new life into the Freddy movies, for instance… hit the reboot button and just start over. Same thing with ASM. ‘Starting over’ trumps anything original now.
“When District 9 was released I saw it with a friend of mine and then pointed out how that movie could only be distributed by Hollywood but not created by it (which was true – it was independently produced outside Hollywood by Peter Jackson and then distributed by Columbia). The reason Hollywood couldn’t make it? It was too smart. It was too original. It hadn’t ever been done before. Instead of seeing a story that could become popular a Hollywood exec would look at it and say “Where the Hell are the toys? Where’s the licensing?!”
From BertoneBeatle:
“OH DEAR LORD…
“Ok, ‘Casino Royale’, ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘Star Trek’ were all good and successful….but this while REBOOT REBOOT REBOOT fad is friggin ridonkulous. It’s getting so hearing the word is annoying. It’s like REBOOT-mania. ENOUGH”
