Predicting the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice

By the end of this weekend, the 2009-10 Oscar race should become a little clearer. Two annual awards show which boast the power of Oscar prognostication – the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and the Golden Globes, handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – will televise their ceremonies this weekend. The BFCA goes first, airing the CCMA on Friday, Jan. 15, at 9 p.m. ET on VH1. The Globes, meanwhile, follow Sunday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

Winning either a CCMA or Globe doesn’t necessarily guarantee a film’s Oscar victory, but BFCA members (of which I am one) will tell you the group has accurately predicted the Best Picture winner 8 out of the last 10 years. So I’m going to don my Oscar cap, peer into my crystal ball, and hazard a guess at which pictures will go home happy from each event. I’m limiting my predictions to the major categories. The Golden Globes
Best Motion Picture – Drama: “Inglourious Basterds”
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: “Julie & Julia”
Best Actor – Drama: George Clooney, “Up In the Air”
Best Actress – Drama: Carey Mulligan, “An Education”
Best Actor – Musical or Comedy: Matt Damon, “The Informant!”
Best Actress – Musical or Comedy: Meryl Streep, “Julie & Julia”
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz, “Inglourious Basterds”
Best Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique, “Precious”
