Haiti single “Everybody Hurts” tops UK chart
The Haiti cover of “Everybody Hurts” by some of Hollywood’s top stars has hit the number one spot on the UK charts. The record has sold more than 453,000 copies in its first week to shoot it straight to the top. The recording was organized by Simon Cowell and features Leona Lewis, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams and Take That all performing a cover of REM’s “Everybody Hurts.”
According to BBC, the proceeds from the record will be split between the Disasters Emergency Committee and The Sun newspaper’s Helping Haiti campaign. Offial UK Charts Company’s Martin Talbot said, “The public have clearly taken the plight of the Haitian people to heart – this record is huge.” HMV’s Gennaro Castaldo stated, “It’s already the biggest seller of the year so far, and is now likely to go on to be the number one single of 2010.”
