Don Hahn and Peter Schneider discuss ‘Waking Sleeping Beauty’

On March 26, Disney is releasing one of their unlikeliest films in the history of the studio: Waking Sleeping Beauty, a tell-all about the fall, rise and eventual fracturing of Disney animation between 1984 and 1994. Director Don Hanh, who produced several of Disney’s biggest hits, including Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, assembled all of the movers and shakers of that era to discuss the ups and downs of their remarkable return to form, and the resulting documentary is a revelatory, warts-and-all look both at the creative process and studio politics.

Hollywood News sat down on Thursday with Hahn and producer Peter Schneider to discuss their work on the film. Comfortably nestled into a couch on the third floor of Disney’s old animation building in Burbank, Calif., Hahn and Schneider not only discussed the challenge of compiling candid, unrestrained interviews from so many high-profile subjects, but reflected on the prospect of unearthing the real truth about that tumultuous time in Disney’s history.
