Will ‘Captain America’ fight Hugo Weaving?

BY SEAN O’CONNELL

“The First Avenger: Captain America” reportedly is circling its main villain. Now it needs to cast its hero!

Hugo Weaving (“The Matrix”) is in negotiations to play the Red Skull in Joe Johnston’s anticipated big-screen adventure, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The two collaborated on “The Wolfman” for Universal earlier this year.

In the Marvel comic books, Red Skull opposed Cap during WWII, where most of the film’s action will take place. But eventually, the plot will have to shift to modern times, as Captain America is expected to join Iron Man, Thor and possibly The Hulk in an “Avengers” movie.

Weaving would make an excellent Red Skull. But whom will he fight? Names discussed for the role of Captain America include Chris Evans (“Fantastic Four”), John Krasinski (“The Office”), Mike Vogel (“She’s Out of My League”) and Chase Crawford (“Gossip Girl”). Yet no one has been signed.

Filming will have to begin soon. Marvel has announced a July 22, 2011 release date, and changing that could cause headaches. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge.
