Ashley Greene on board for Jennifer Garner’s “Butter”

And here we thought actresses were supposed to steer clear of butter. Instead, Ashley Greene, the young star best known (right now) for her involvement in the “Twilight” franchise, has embraced a part in the upcoming comedy “Butter,” which stars Jennifer Garner.

Filming begins in Louisiana next week on the Weinstein Co. comedy, about residents of a small Midwestern town who sharpen their competitive edges in an annual butter-carving contest. Greene, 23, has been cast as a high school rebel. Jim Field Smith (“She’s Out of My League”) will direct.

Reuters says Greene recently wrapped shooting the horror thriller “The Apparition” for director Todd Lincoln. And in June, of coursem she’ll reprise the role of vampire Alice Cullen for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.”

It’s interesting to see the “Twilight” cast members attempt to find projects outside of the franchise. For an actress like Kristen Stewart, who had a career prior to joining Stephenie Meyer’s vampire franchise, it’s easier to step into completely different roles (see the actress rock out as Joan Jett in “The Runaways” this weekend).

But for Greene, participating in an ensemble might be the best step as she figures out what track her career will push her on.
