“Iron Man 2” director spills War Machine details as premiere looms

Do you want to go into the “Iron Man” sequel with a clean slate when it opens on May 7? Then you are going to want to avoid the spoilers Jon Favreau revealed in an L.A. Times interview posted late Tuesday night.

War Machine, it turns out, is the code name for a suit Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) designed. In the film, it’s hijacked by military contractor Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) and outfitted with more weapons than one fanboy can handle.

On his approach to War Machine, a character played by Don Cheadle in the sequel, Favreau told the newspaper, “The conversation was ‘How do you expand what’s there, how do you make the sequel bigger and better?’ and one is way is, in essence, doubling up on Iron Man. War Machine let’s you do that.”

Favreau continued, “The fun part is the ridiculousness of it — just how many guns can you put on this thing? That’s the fun part of this character.”

“Iron Man 2,” which kicks off 2010’s summer blockbuster season, will be in theaters May 7.
