Crystal Bowersox inspires fans to donate $5K to Ohio charity

Crystal Bowersox appealed to fans to support an Ohio camp that she holds dear.”American Idol” standout Bowersox, an Elliston native, attended the camps as a child.

Last night, local organizers responded.

An Elliston, Ohio crowd presented a check for $5,000 on Wednesday to the Diabetes Youth Services group, which runs camps for children who have diabetes, according to The Fremont Ohio News Messenger.

“I was floored,” said Susan Harms, director of DYS. “(Bowersox) asked that the proceeds from the T-shirts (bearing her name) go to us. It’s priceless. She’s a role model. She is an idol.”

Bowersox also floored judges Tuesday night when she performed a bluesy version of Curtis Maykfield’s “People Get Ready” during the inspiration-themed episode. The singer, considered a front-runner in this off-kilter season, grew teary as the song concluded. It worked. Bowersox survived elimination the following evening as fellow “Idol” Tim Urban was sent home for receiving the least amount of audience votes.
