“Sex and the City 2’s” Kim Cattrall gets deep with roles, men

Kim Cattrall aka Samantha Jones in “Sex and the City,” spoke with Vulture about her turn in the recent indie flick that’s playing at the Tribeca Film Festival, “Meet Monica Velour.” In the film, Cattrell plays a different type of sexy vamp – a washed up ‘70s porn star that’s out of her prime who is pursued by a teenage fan.

In sum, while the character might reside in a neighboring galaxy to Samantha – it’s 180 degrees from the “Sex and the City” babe. Whereas Samantha is surrounded by friends in a Manhattan penthouse, Velour lives with six cats in a trailer park.

In prepping for the film, the director Keith Bearden asked Cattrall to gain 35 pounds, which she refused to do on account of health reasons (she settled for 15).

According to Cattrall, she’s far from gorgeous onscreen:

“ Most of the time as an actress, you want to look desirable, you want to be pretty, you want to be sexy, you want to be lit properly — whereas here there were days when I didn’t even have any makeup on,” the actress told Vulture, “There were days when they actually changed the light to make me look harder and more overweight or just more f***ed up.”

Cattrall also lets it known that she’s not as shallow as her “Sex and the City” alter-ego, having grown up without any starry-eye crushes.

“I like more reality-based people. I’ve always been an actor so I know what actors are about,” says the actress.

Currently, Cattrall is acting opposite Brian Dennehy in London’s West End production of “Private Lives.”
