Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear are “The Kennedys”
Katie Holmes will play First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Greg Kinnear has committed to play President John F. Kennedy in the History Channel’s first mini-series “The Kennedys.”
The mini-series will explore the familial connections between the political dynasty, as well as John and Bobby Kennedy’s uneven relationship with family patriarch Joe Kennedy Sr.
Barry Pepper of the Coen Brothers’ upcoming remake “True Grit” will play Bobby, while two-time Oscar nominee Tom Wilkinson will play Joe. Kinnear is also a previous Oscar nominee for his work in “As Good as it Gets.” Holmes recently appeared in the Sundance entry “The Extra Man” from “The Nanny Diaries” directors Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman.
“24” co-creator Joel Surnow is the brains behind “The Kennedys,” along with Asylum’s Jonathan Koch and Steve Michaels. Steve Kronish is writing the screenplay, while Jon Cassar will direct according to Variety’s Michael Schneider. Both Kronish and Cassar worked on “24.”
“The Kennedys” is planned to be an eight-hour event that will run on History in 2011.
Surnow is known as a conservative, however, the History Channel vouches that the channel’s top notch historians, led by
Steve Gillon, Ph.D., are overseeing the projects’ story details.
Kinnear follows in the footsteps of such actors as Bruce Greenwood (“Star Trek”) who have played the slain president. Jeanne Tripplehorn recently played Jacqueline Kennedy in the HBO tele-film “Grey Gardens” last year.
As of Wednesday night, 57% of US Weekly website visitors think Holmes will make a great Jackie O.
