“Twilight” fans approved of Kellan Lutz’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” performance

By Kim Palacios

“Twilight” fans with a soft spot for Emmett flocked to theaters this past weekend to get a glimpse of Kellan Lutz in the 2010 remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. He had featured prominently in early trailers for the film, and fans hoped his character, Dean Russell, would do so again in the movie.

Though he didn’t have as much screen time as his biggest fans might have enjoyed, many are hoping that the film’s success will help boost Kellan’s career. The film made $32.2 million in its opening, weekend, which already puts it $5 million in profit above its original budget; its high rankings and good reviews among target audiences will further guarantee its success.

As far as critical acclaim, reviews are predictably unfavorable, as was expected for a six-film franchise that exceeds 25 years of age. Whereas the original “Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984) scored a 95% on the Tomato Meter, the 2010 remake scored a mere 15%, underscoring a common problem—horror remakes consistently fail to capture the intrigue of the original film.

Movie studios, on the other hand, are willing to remake sequel after sequel of a franchise that has proven to be successful. By their logic, a brand new story with unfamiliar characters and an unfamiliar plot could fail, whereas a previously successful franchise (particularly where there is an opportunity to capture a new generation of viewers to buy into the franchise) is almost guaranteed to deliver results.

Corroborating this view was Warner Brothers President of Distribution, Dan Fellman, who is quoted by MovieWeb.com as having said “[A Nightmare on Elm Street] is the largest horror opening in the April-May corridor, and it just proves there’s a lot left in the franchise.”
