Rolling Stone names 100 Monkeys one of 2010’s Breakout Bands to Watch

By Kim Palacios

Does the non-acting talent of Twilight stars never end? The ongoing success of Jackson Rathbone’s band, 100 Monkeys, is proof that it may not.

The band, for which Rathbone intermittently sings and plays guitar , was just named by Rolling Stone as one of Bamboozle 2010’s Five Breakout Bands to Watch. And, I have to agree—sheer uniqueness and personality alone makes 100 Monkeys well worth checking out.

“The hundredth monkey effect generally describes the instant, paranormal spreading of an idea or ability to the remainder of a population once a certain portion of that population has heard of the new idea or learned the new ability,” reads the band’s web site in explanation of its name. Indeed, the fresh, fun approach to its music, live shows, and interacting with fans has had a viral effect.

Rolling Stone agrees, calling the band’s music pleasantly “spazzy” and “energetic”, calling out the “can this be real factor” of “five guys in bandanas jumping around and playing hand drums, trumpet and flute”. Indeed, 100 Monkeys does manages to pull off being quirky and authentic without being weird and forced. How many other bands are coordinated by a “Bananager”?

In addition to recent Rolling Stone fame, “Twilight” fans are hopeful that 100 Monkeys might find their way onto the soundtrack for “Eclipse” or even “Breaking Dawn”. Though the production teams have been different for each Twilight Saga film, the use of Robert Pattinson’s songs on the soundtrack for “Twilight” has engendered a sense of hope.
