How wonderful “American Idol” would be with Elton John in its world
Hollywoodnews.com: Fox really wants Sir Elton John, 63, to replace Simon Cowell as judge on “American Idol.” Though the legendary rock singer passed the offer up in January, he met with executives again while in New York for the Time Magazine 100 gala.
Those behind “Idol” have been excited about John ever since he had words on the air with Cowell and the other judges about kicking Jennifer Hudson off.
OK! Magazine got the scoop and reports that Fox is dangling more than $33 million (a paycheck higher than Cowell’s) in front of John. John’s involvement on the show is a guaranteed ratings spike, which have been sliding since Cowell announced he was leaving the show to launch the U.S. version of “X Factor,” a show that has nothing to do with Marvel’s “X-Men.” (Although that would be cool if Cowell was really producing a reality contestant show about mutant superheros).
Talking to OK!, an Idol producer said, “ “Everyone loves Sir Elton. As well as being outspoken, he has an air of gravitas as an icon of the music industry. He’s British too. Having Sir Elton on board would be a guaranteed ratings blockbuster all over the world.”
Another senior Idol insider told OK!: “Part of the pitch to get Sir Elton on board was that the show can become an even bigger fundraiser for various charities. We’re barely more than a cat’s whisker away from getting ink on paper.”
