Damn you hunky apes! James Franco joins “Planet of the Apes” prequel

Hollywoodnews.com: James Franco will be playing a scientist in the war between humans and monkeys in Fox’s “Planet of the Apes” prequel “Rise of the Apes.”

Apparently he beat out a number of prestigious actors (Duh, he’s good looking and a brilliant performer) after meeting with director Rupert Wyatt over the weekend and talking about — very large gorillas.

Variety was among those outlets making headlines with the story.

Logline for “Rise of the Apes” reads as a man’s monkey experiments going haywire in present-day San Francisco. They become so smart, they wind up taking over the world.

Peter Jackson’s WETA digital will create photo-realistic apes onscreen ala the N’avi aliens in “Avatar,” rather than the costumed actors in previous “Apes” installments.

“Rise of the Apes” rolls on July 5 and opens on June 24, 2011.

Franco will be seen in Danny Boyle’s Fox Searchlight film “127 Hours.”
