MTV picks up 12 episodes of “Teen Wolf”

HollywoodNews.com: Filled with suspense and the struggle to discover one’s true identity, MGM and MTV will put a modern spin on one of the most popular classic films of the eighties, “Teen Wolf.” The reinvention comes alive as a sexy thriller set against the drama of high school life with a forbidden, romantic love story at its core. From the creator of “Criminal Minds”, Jeff Davis, and the executive producer of “The 4400”, René Echevarria, “Teen Wolf” is to commence production this summer with 12 one-hour episodes.

The thriller stars Tyler Posey (“Maid in Manhattan,” “Brothers and Sisters”), as the newly bitten werewolf, ‘Scott McCall’, Dylan O’Brien as his best friend ‘Stiles’, Crystal Reed as the mysterious new girl in town, ‘Allison’, and Tyler Hoechlin (“Road to Perdition,” “7th Heaven”) as the older and possibly quite dangerous werewolf, ‘Derek Hale.’

“Teen Wolf” is a co-production between MGM and MTV. Chris Ottinger, Executive Vice President, MGM Worldwide Television said, “We’re excited to be in business with MTV on the Teen-Wolf production and MTV is the perfect network home for this show. The youth audience is really crazy about this genre and we’re pleased to bring this werewolf mythology series to television. We are taking the characters through the traditional male-female relationship challenges, both the conflict and the romance, and we’ll deal with young adult relationships in a serious manner. We have a young cast that is amazing and fresh who resonate with the targeted audience for the series. Drama, romance, conflict, comedy, jeopardy, mysteries — TEEN WOLF will have it all.”

MGM controls worldwide distribution rights outside the US to “Teen Wolf” and will screen the pilot for international buyers at next week’s May Screenings.

Gary Marenzi, Co-President, MGM Worldwide Television said: “Teen Wolf has all of the right elements for global success, including suspense, drama, romance, and supernatural powers. We’ve assembled a great creative team to enhance the quality look and feel of the production, and the show can be programmed across multiple time periods. Teens and young adults all over the world will readily identify with Teen Wolf’s appealing cast, and come back every week to be with their favorite characters.”

Always an outsider and often unnoticed, Scott McCall yearns to be recognized in some small way that takes him out of his typical state of high school anonymity. When his best friend, Stiles, convinces him to go into the woods one night to join a police search for a dead body, Scott encounters a creature in the darkness that will forever change his life. Narrowly escaping an attack with a vicious bite in his side, the next day brings strange surprises for Scott at school. Suddenly, he discovers newfound powers; he can hear things he shouldn’t be able to hear, see with startling accuracy and move with incredible reflexes. Usually a bench-warmer on the lacrosse team, Scott becomes the starting player and catches the eye of Lydia Martin, the school’s most popular girl. But it’s the new girl in town, Allison Argent, who captures Scott’s heart. Throughout the season, he will have to fight his darker animal urges, contend with other werewolves–and outrun a family of werewolf hunters sworn to kill him and his kind.
