World premiere of Muse’s “Neutron Star Collision” video: the verdict

By Kim Palacios

Though Muse’s “Neutron Star Collision (Love is Forever) was released last week as a single, this morning MTV.com hosted the world premiere of the video. Named as the primary single for “Eclipse” (i.e., the theme song), fans were naturally eager to see how the film would feature into Muse’s video. But, how did it really measure up? Here is my take on the song and the video, as well as my final verdict:

The Song: The theme of the song is reminiscent of Bella’s early words in the “Twilight” screenplay. Muse’s lyrics repeat ideas around the permanence of love and a certain solidarity in death. In contrast with Bella’s musings…

“I’d never given much thought to how I would die. But dying in place of someone I love, seems like a good way to go. I can’t bring myself to regret the decisions that brought me face to face with death. They also brought me to Edward.”

…are Muse’s lyrics, which are, in some form, repeated over and over:

“Love it is forever, and we’ll die, we’ll die together…”

The Video: In addition to flashing snippets from the film (e.g., Bella and Edward in the meadow, Edward proposing to Bella, fight scenes, and Edward’s confrontations with Jacob), the video conjures other non-“Eclipse” imagery, such as a lone Muse band member playing a black grand piano in shots reminiscent of ones in “Twilight.

The Verdict: I wanted to like both the video and the song, but I found them a little too obvious. Whereas songs on previous Twilight soundtracks seemed chosen to fit a mood, “Neutron Star Collision” was obviously custom-written to a pretty watered down spec, with more of a focus on lyrics. It reminded me of Dianne Warren songs I love to hate (like “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”), and the corresponding movie moments that made me cringe. Let’s hope this song’s showing in “Eclipse” doesn’t fall in the realm of cringeworthy.
