Richard Donner’s masterpiece — and yes, I do mean masterpiece — “The Goonies” celebrates its 25th anniversary this November with a treasure-laden “Collector’s Edition” release as well as the first-ever Blu-ray rendition of the classic kids-and-pirates adventure.
“Goonies” always was an obsession. It’s one of those films that had such a profound impact on me as I was forming my film conscience. I even begged my parents to vacation in oregon one summer so that we could explore the same caves plundered by Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Keri Green, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Ke Hoy Quan and the rest of the Goonies in 1985. We never made it. Hopefully this collector’s edition set fills that void.
Due on Nov. 2, the “Goonies” set will come with a new board game, collectible storyboard prints, a 1985 souvenir magazine with behind-the-scenes stories about the actual filming in Astoria, Oregon (including the production design that transformed Astoria into the “Goon Docks”), and a reprint of a 2009 article with updates of the entire cast, as well as producer Steven Spielberg and director Richard Donner.
Some fans already started celebrating. A series of events were held in Oregon last weekend to honor the film. Several of the original cast members reportedly attended the four-day event, with Warner Bros. Consumer Products throwing its support behind the “Goon Docks,” a retro-retail pop-up shop in Astoria that boasts plenty of Goonies merchandise.
The Goonies experience isn’t limited to home video, however. Donner’s film will be available On Demand from cable and satellite providers, and for permanent download and digital rental through iTunes, Amazon Video On Demand, PlayStation Store and Xbox LIVE Zune Video Marketplace.
As for the discs, they will round out with a cast-and-crew commentary track, a “Making of” documentary, deleted scenes, trailers, and the music video for Cyndi Lauper’s “The Goonies ‘R Good Enough.”
