Is Guillermo del Toro circling a “Van Helsing” reboot?

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: This probably isn’t the news Guillermo del Toro fans were hoping for.

Now that the visionary director has walked away from “The Hobbit,” thanks to scheduling delays caused by financial conflicts at MGM Studios, all eyes are on del Toro’s next project. AICN listed at least 10 titles del toro has been circling. Now it appears he has zoomed in on one.

Universal reportedly is developing a new Van Helsing film, and del Toro wants to produce and write it, according to Slash Film.

The mere mention of “Van Helsing” sends shudders. While it is an interesting premise — a hunter takes down the top monsters in Universal’s horror canon, from Dracula to Frankenstein and the Mummy — the Stephen Sommers-Hugh Jackman collaboration was a CGI nightmare.

The good news is that, in del Toro’s hands, a rejuvenated “Van Helsing” has potential. His special effects in the “Hellboy” films, as well as “Pan’s Labyrinth,” were spectacular, and the director has expressed on record his adoration for the classic horror creatures.

But any project not called “The Hobbit” sounds like two steps down for del Toro. I wonder if this new challenge can get his creative juices flowing.
