Can “Eclipse” Save The Summer Box Office?

By Tracy Rosenfield

hollywoodnews.com: According to Entertainment Weekly, this summer’s movies are neither as financially viable nor Oscar-worthy as last summer. By this time last year, “The Hurt Locker”, “Up in the Air”, “The Hangover” and “Star Trek” already hit theaters. We had both blockbusters and Oscar contenders making a showing at the box office. However, this past Memorial Day weekend produced the worst movie grosses in nine years and total summer box office sales are down $147 million from last year.

Aside from “How to Train Your Dragon”, which will likely get a “Best Animated Feature” Oscar nod and “Iron Man 2”, this summer has produced no other Oscar contenders nor blockbusters. Even “Sex and the City 2” which opened at $57 million last year, opened to only $31 million this year.

However, there are some supposed blockbusters lined up for later this summer, the most anticipated of which is “Eclipse”. “Eclipse” is likely to break records just ass “New Moon” did last summer and save the box office. “Twilight” fans are, well, fanatically devoted to the series, and with “Eclipse” having much more action than the previous two films, boyfriends, husbands, and other men likely won’t be as reluctant to see the film in the theater.

So, we can count on “Eclipse” playing a large part in saving 2010’s summer box office season, but studios need to remember, the series is only so long and there will be no “Twilight” to save them next summer.
