Angelina Jolie gets flack over Cleopatra role

HollywoodNews.com: Angelina Jolie as Cleopatra? Not to some groups.

While Scott Rudin has championed the actress for the role in the film version of Stacy Schiff’s book “Cleopatra: A Life,” members of the African American community think it’s a crazy choice according to the New York Daily News.

“I don’t care how full Angelina Jolie’s lips are, how many African children she adopts, or how bronzed her skin will become for the film,” Shirea Carroll wrote in an editorial for Essence.com.

“I firmly believe this role should have gone to a Black woman…What’s next? A biopic on Sojourner Truth played by Betty White?”

Apparently, this is the second time that Jolie has found herself criticized over her portrayal of a character of another race. In 2007, she was lambasted for playing Daniel Pearl’s wife Marian who is of African origin.

Jolie defended herself in Time Magazine saying “It is not about the color of your skin. It is about who you are.”

Historians cannot verify or certify Cleopatra’s appearance. She was of Egyptian origin.

Per ABC News, Egyptologists claim that the seductress of Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and general Mark Anthony was actually “short, fat and plain.”

Can we please get over this ridiculous argument. Cleopatra was NOT of Egyptian origin. Cleopatra was not of African or SubShaharan origin. She was of Macedonian origin. She belonged to a line of rulers that came from Macedonia and conquered Egypt starting with Alexander the Great.
Her family – the Ptolemy line – did not marry outside their own. They even resorted to incest to keep the line “intact.” Even had their been any dalliances with locals that produced children, those children would never have made it to the throne.
If one looks at the number of articles that keep repeating the historical inaccuracy that Cleopatra vii was somehow “dark” or “African” or “Egyptian” you would think that no one went to school anymore.
