Kristen Bell to star opposite Drew Barrymore in ‘Whales’

HollywoodNews.com: Kristen Bell will play an ambitious Los Angeles reporter opposite Drew Barrymore’s animal activist in the upcoming film “Whales.” The film is set during the Cold War circa 1988 and follows a small-town journalist played by John Krasinski and a Greenpeace supporter played by Barrymore. The duo champion the help of superpowers countries in rescuing three grey whales which are trapped under the Arctic Circle.

Ken Kwapis, who directed Krasinski on the U.S. TV version of “The Office,” is slotted to direct from the nonfiction tome “Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event” by Tom Rose.

Working Title and Anonymous Content are onboard as producers of the project.

“Whales” is the latest in a string of projects for Bell who is burgeoning on screen in the wake of her cult success on UPN’s “Veronica Mars.” She’ll star in her second Disney comedy following last January’s “When in Rome” ($33 million at the domestic B.O.) this September entitled “You Again” as well as November’s Screen Gems musical drama “Burlesque” alongside Christina Aguilera and Cher.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story.
