The Twilight Fandom Gives Back

By Kim Palacios

HollywoodNews.com: Twilight Saga stars such as Peter Facinelli, Kellan Lutz and Chaske Spencer are routinely recognized for their charitable work. Yet, tens of thousands of dollars have been raised in the past year by organized groups of Twilight fans. The largest of these organizations is The Fandom Gives Back, which raised $87,640 in conjunction with the release of “New Moon”. Its latest campaign will auction hundreds of Twi-hard goodies alongside the release of “Eclipse”, and is currently underway.

The beneficiary of Fandom Gives Back fundraising is Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), an organization dedicated to fighting childhood cancer. Peter Facinelli was the original catalyst for raising awareness about ALSF, but a group of dedicated fans took matters into their own hands. A committee of fewer than six has engaged thousands of Twi-hards who span the globe in donating services, creative work, and collectibles. During week-long mega-drives such as the current one (which will end on July 3rd), contributed items are sold off to the highest bidder.

So, what’s for sale? Everything under the moon, from autographed collector’s items, to twilight-themed crafts, to things of general interest. Last year’s auction saw everything from memorabilia signed by the “New Moon” cast, to a Twilight fan cookbook, to hotel and airline credits that could be used for vacations. The most coveted item during the “New Moon” campaign was a meet and greet with Jackson Rathbone’s band, 100 Monkeys, which went for $1,600. This campaign’s conservative $50,000 goal is expected to be exceeded (the drive has already surpassed $15,000 in raised funds on its second day).

And, the fundraising won’t end with the release of “Eclipse”. The Fandom Gives Back recently absorbed another popular organization, Twihards4Charity. The latter holds charitable events not only in alignment with the film releases, but also at other times of the year. Stay tuned for more fan-driven giving campaigns in the fall!
