Meryl Streep in talks to play Margaret Thatcher in new biopic Meryl Streep is currently in talks to play controversial former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in an upcoming film by “Mamma Mia” director Phyllida Lloyd, while Jim Broadbent is in talks to play Denis, Margaret’s husband, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The biographical film will portray the prime minister in 1982, during the pivotal seventeen days leading up to the Falklands War, which eventually resulted in soaring approval ratings and a second term for Thatcher.

If cast, this certainly won’t be the first time the Oscar-winning Streep has done cinematic justice to renowned real-life women, but Thatcher will be arguably her most famous (or infamous) character yet.

What do you think about this potential new role for Meryl? Disappointing in that an English actress was not cast over the American Streep? Or sure to be a brilliantly terrifying performance adding new sympathy and dimension to the roundly hated ex-prime minister and resulting in yet another Oscar nom?
