Upcoming season of “The Apprentice” to feature contestants hit by the recession

By Kim Palacios

“The Apprentice” will return to its roots on Thursdays this fall when it ditches celebs in favor of regular people. And, not just any regular people—season ten will feature contestants who suffered major setbacks as a result of the recession. Competition could be as fierce as ever when participants trade financial woes and unemployment for the coveted prize. In addition to fame and fortune, the winner will score a job with Donald Trump.

Since its series premiere in 2004, only the first six seasons focused on everyday people. January 2008 brought season seven, the first of three “Celebrity Apprentice” seasons runs won by media mogul Piers Morgan, comedienne Joan Rivers, and rocker Bret Michaels.

Whereas “Celebrity Apprentice” contestants wish to win the game in order to bring exposure to a cause and raise money on behalf of a charity, “The Apprentice” contestants compete on behalf of themselves. The grand prize for the original “The Apprentice” format is a year-long apprenticeship with The Donald himself.

Early contestants, such as Kwame Jackson, Bill Rancic, and Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth were spun as high-potential up-and-comers with ambition, but season ten “The Apprentice” contestants are being portrayed with a different slant. “There’s nothing more American than a second chance,” the voice over intones in the preview. “The ultimate job interview returns.”
