Mel Gibson looks to mend fences with ex-wife

HollywoodNews.com: UPDATE: Mel Gibson is full of regret say sources close to the actor. And that’s an understatement.

In the throes of the Oksana Grigorieva scandal, the actor is more than willing to take his wife of 30 years, Robyn Gibson, back. Rumors have circulated the web lately that the actor-director will even move back to Australia, though his PR rep Alan Nierob axed the gossip.

The Australia rumors have been fueled by Gibson’s sale of his Tudor-style mansion in upstate New York for $28 million – $17 million below the asking price. Also his Malibu, Calif., property is on the block (One piece of trivia that many forget about Gibson is that he was born in Peekskill, New York – even though he was raised in Australia).

A source tells Rob Shuter at Popeater: “Meeting Oksana Grigorieva and leaving his wife was the biggest mistake of Mel’s life. Robyn and the seven children they have together are heartbroken to see what has happened to him. Seeing the man they know as a husband and father being portrayed as a monster is very painful and not the man they thought they knew. However, neither is the man who would walk about from them for a younger Russian gold digger.”

Mel and Robyn broke up in April 2009 upon news that Oksana became pregnant with the “Apocalypto” director’s child.

In the wake of Robyn’s defense of Mel to an L.A. judge last week (refuting his abusive tendencies), the actor-director is looking to make amends with his ex-wife.

“Mel didn’t ask Robyn for the affidavit and wept when he found out about she had done for him. He just wants his life to return to normal. Before he ever met that woman,” a source tells Shuter. “He knows his Hollywood career is over. Now he just wants to return to Australia with his ex wife and children. Buy a ranch in the outback and live the rest of his life out of the spotlight.”
