Malick’s “Tree,” with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, not blooming at TIFF

By Sean O’Connell When will Terrence Malick’s anticipated “Tree of Life” bloom?

Not this September at the Toronto International Film Festival, according to Peter Howell of the Toronto Sun. He reports that Malick’s film — which stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in a film whose plot of being shrouded in mystery — was being courted by TIFF’s organizers but will not bow at this year’s fest.

“None of us really expects that to happen at this point,” said TIFF co-director Cameron Bailey. “It would be a lovely surprise, but we’re not holding our breath. We know he’s definitely still working on the film, and he’s tired of being pushed by people. We’ve backed off and Venice has backed off.”

Howell also writes that a previously confirmed Gala film and a coveted Midnight film have dropped out, but did not mention names. He did, however, tease that Doug Liman’s “Fair Game” — which also stars Penn — would be a late addition to the TIFF line-up.

This year’s TIFF runs Sept. 9-19. The initial list of Gala screenings can be found here. More details will be posted at Hollywood News as they are released.
