Dustin Hoffman might be a “Little Focker” after all

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Is Dustin Hoffman being recruited to rescue “Little Fockers” at the last minute?

That might be extreme, though there’s a report circling the Web today that the Oscar winner is being tapped to reprise his role of Bernis Focker — Ben Stiller’s proud papa — for reshoots to the Universal comedy which is due in theaters this December.

Hoffman’s absence from the long “Fockers” trailer was evident, especially when his on-screen partner, Barbara Streisand, was name-dropped at clip’s end. Rumors had Hoffman and Universal at odds near the negotiation table. But Vulture now reports that “Fockers” could go back into production to shoot a few scenes that would punch up the film’s ending, and that there’s a good chance Hoffman will be part of those reshoots.

Reshoots are common on Hollywood productions, even at this late stage in the game. And “Fockers” could certainly benefit from Hoffman, who was so earnestly sweet in “Meet the Fockers,” he effortlessly counterbalanced Robert De Niro’s gruffness.

I’d like to see Hoffman back on screen with this ensemble, though with the addition of Laura Dern, Jessica Alba, and Harvey Keitel as a contractor, this film is getting dangerously close to full capacity. How do you make room for the Owen Wilsons, the Blythe Danners, and the Teri Polos of the “Focker” universe?

We’ll find out for sure soon enough. “Little Fockers” opens Dec. 22.
