George Clooney in behind-the-scenes look at “The American”

By Sean O’Connell Considering the high profile of those involved in its production, “The American” is flying under the radar. Focus Features hope to change that today.

The thriller, directed by rock photographer Anton Corbijn (he also helmed the Joy Division film “Control”), stars George Clooney as an assassin taking one last job in Italy.

It opens Wednesday, Sept. 1, but has stayed off the mainstream radar up until this point. We’ve seen a short teaser online, and a gorgeous throwback poster adorns the wall of movie houses nationwide. Check it here.

Today, Focus gives Yahoo Movies an exclusive, 2-and-a-half-minute behind-the-scenes look at “The American,” complete with cast and crew interviews (no George, though). Learn more about the film here.

It looks intriguing. Clooney can do no wrong in my book. I’m not sure “The American” has the makings of an awards contender, and the early September release date seems to suggest Focus feels the same way. But our minds could easily change once we see “The American” for ourselves.
