Writers Guild of America, West releases statement regarding Google-Verizon internet plan

HollywoodNews.com: The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) today issued the following statement:

“The Google-Verizon announcement to carve up the Internet is further evidence of the need for swift action from Congress and the FCC to institute net neutrality and protect an open Internet. These powerful corporate forces are joining together to design an Internet that best serves their bottom lines rather than the public interest.

The Internet is our modern public square, the home of free speech and independent voices. All other media, news, and entertainment are dominated by a few corporations. The Google-Verizon proposal will allow broadband providers to effectively create a default fast lane online for the already dominant media companies. Further, the proposal to exempt wireless broadband from all net neutrality rules promises corporate control of this rapidly developing platform. Those who can pay to partner with broadband providers will succeed in transferring their control of traditional media to the Internet to the detriment of consumers as well as the creative community.”
