Gemma Arterton is the U.K.’s next great export
HollywoodNews.com: Move over Kate Winslet and Keira Knightley, because the next sexy edgy British actress who’ll be competing for roles is Gemma Arterton.
While U.S. auds know her mostly from such films as the James Bond flick “Quantum of Solace” and Jerry Bruckheimer’s videogame adaptation “The Prince of Persia,” Arterton wants to be known as a “serious” thespian stateside.
According to the Daily Mail, the actress feels she’s perceived as a “totty.”
Hence Arterton, 24, plans to swap blockbusters for more serious fare such as her U.K. thriller “The Disappearance of Alice Creed” which has made over $56,000 at the domestic box office to date. The film bowed on August 6.
Though Winslet enjoyed blockbuster success with “Titanic” and Knightley with “Pirates of the Caribbean,” both actresses have a number of smaller films on their resume. Such fare, when supported by critics, typically gets a run during the Oscar race.
In “Alice Creed,” Arterton plays a kidnapped wealthy woman who is taken hostage by two ex-cons.
“For me, it can really be frustrating when you’re just seen as the totty, and I know that I’ve always taken acting so seriously.
“The Bond film took me into that ‘hottie’ category. It’s easy for people to put you in that ‘hot girl’ slot.
“I don’t want to play those characters any more. Now I’m starting to be in the kinds of films I would go and see – quirky and interesting and not particularly blockbustery. So I have to prove my salt. And now is the time.”
