‘Piranha 3D’ heads for the beach again in part II
HollywoodNews.com: Following in the footsteps of another celebrity fish, “Jaws,” “Piranha 3D” wants to take its hunger to another beach – in a sequel.
Dimension announced that it would make a follow up to the film which ranked sixth this past weekend in a crowded marketplace, making $10.1 million.
Mark Canton is set to produce again, though it isn’t confirmed that Alexandre Aja will be back to helm. “Piranha” is based on a series of cult films that began in 1978. The new reboot stars Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames and in a tip of the hat to “Jaws” – Richard Dreyfus.
“I’m delighted because the sequel is something we’ve clearly been talking about,” Canton told Variety, “With the really popular response of the audience, both here and in England, it has cemented our going to the script phase. We know it was a bifurcated weekend at the domestic box office, but we had the lowest drop of any film on Sunday night.”
Dimension is the sister label to the Weinstein Co. known for its action and horror films i.e. “Sin City” and “Scream.”
The label’s commitment to a sequel signifies its faith in the long term prospects of “Piranha 3D” at the fall box office.
