George Clooney’s ‘The American’ triumphs at the box office

HollywoodNews.com: George Clooney’s action thriller “The American” took the lead at the box office this weekend and looks on track to be the leading film for this year’s Labor Day weekend.

Early estimates show that the flick brought in $13 million alone on Friday and around $16.1 million through today since it opened in theaters on Wednesday, according to Entertainment Weekly. If the film keeps up this pace it should bring in a total of $20 million through the holiday weekend.

“Takers” fell from first to second place with $11.5 million and “Machete” followed in third place with $11.3 million. Horror film “The Last Exorcism” continued to bring in around $7.5 million and “Going the Distance” rounded out the top five opening with $6.8 million.
