Whoopi Goldberg speaks on mother’s passing on The View

HollywoodNews.com: Whoopi Goldberg used her talk show to reveal the heartbreaking news that her mother has died.

Goldberg left the London theatre production of ‘Sister Act’ last month to return to the US, after her mother Emma Johnson suffered a stroke.

“My mum passed on the 29th of August,” Goldberg revealed on the first show of the new season of ‘The View.’

She added: “One of the great women – truly one of the great women – one of the best people I’ve had the privilege of knowing. She was an extraordinary woman and really my brother and I were very, very lucky to have her in our lives…”

The ‘Color Purple’ star also called her mother “a great teacher” and said: “I think I’m just sad sometimes that I think, ‘Who will love me the way that she did?’ But I realize that my brother and I have each other and so we’re OK…”

The first guest on the show, David Letterman, later said: “That was the loveliest thing I’ve ever heard someone say about their mother. I thought that was beautiful.”
