J.K. Rowling Discusses the “Long Road to Success” with Oprah

HollywoodNews.com: More interesting clips from Oprah’s interview with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling have been revealed, and Rowling spoke about why she pushed on with trying to get her books published, even after facing multiple rejections.

Oprah: How many times were you turned down, the first time, before you were published?

JKR: My agent knows that better than I do. I don’t know, but it was a lot. A lot of people didn’t want it. A lot of people sent it back, virtually on return postage like a boomerang.

Oprah: Like “what is this?”

JKR: Yeah.

Oprah: What made you keep trying?

JKR: I really, I did really believe in it. I just thought, “No, this is a good story.” For some reason – and I wasn’t very resilient at all at that time of my life, I was a wreck in a lot of ways – but for some reason, I can even remember being quite pleased with, I know it sounds masochistic, but I was even quite pleased with the rejection letters. “F. Scott Fitzgerald got these!” You know, it’s just like, it’s all part of being a writer. You’ve got to be rejected a bit first. I just had faith in the story. I do remember one very low point: There was this one publisher that kept it for six months, and I thought, “This is it, they’re going to take it.” And then at the end of six months, they turned around and said, “No we don’t want it.” And then when Bloomsbury – my UK publisher – came along and said “we want it”, that publisher who’d kept it for six months joined in – turned around and said, “Actually, you know what? On second thoughts we want that.” And I said no, they’re not having it. They put me through six months…I mean I know they didn’t know, I know it wasn’t personal, they didn’t know I was living hand-to-mouth and you know, praying everyday they would take it, but…I wanted the people who wanted it immediately.
