Daniel Radcliffe Speaks Out on Recent Suicides Related to Gay-Bullying

HollywoodNews.com: Daniel Radcliffe, star of the Harry Potter films and a very vocal advocate for the rights of the LGBT community, has expressed his heartbreak over recent LGBT-related suicides amoung young people.

In a statement made exclusively to MTV News, Radcliffe commented on the suicide deaths of Tyler Clementi, Seth Walsh, Asher Brown, Billy Lucas and Justin Aaberg, saying that news of the deaths were “heartbreaking for me.”

“These young people were bullied and tormented by people that should have been their friends. We have a responsibility to be better to each other, and accept each others’ differences regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ability, or religion and stand up for someone when they’re bullied. When a friend is feeling depressed or says they’re thinking of killing themselves, we must take it seriously and get them help.”

He also urged those who are in need of help to contact The Trevor Project, the leading national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth; their services include the only accredited, nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth.

“My deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of these excellent young people. And to all the young people who are being bullied right now, you are not alone. Call the Trevor Lifeline at 866 4-U-TREVOR, because there’s always someone there who will listen and who can help.”

The statement from Radcliffe comes after a string of LGBT-related suicides have been featured prominently in the media.

Tyler Clementi was an 18-year old student at Rutgers University who committed suicide by jumping off of a bridge after a video of him having sex with another man was secretly filmed by his roommate and uploaded to the internet.

Seth Walsh and Asher Brown were both 13 years old when they took their own lives, about a week apart. Seth Walsh died a few days after hanging himself from a tree in his backyard, after years of taunts and bullying due to his sexual orientation; Asher Brown shot himself after being teased about his small size, his religion, and being called gay by his classmates, who would often perform mock gay acts on him.

15-year old Billy Lucas hung himself in his family’s barn after being constantly called a “fag” by other classmates. Another 15-year old, Justin Aaberg, hung himself after being bullied, and after breaking up with his boyfriend. All of the deaths happened during the month of September, and are only a small number of the growing numbers of teens who are taking their lives rather than dealing with the constant torment and harassment.
