Disney continues to tease “Tangled”
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Disney continues to preview snippets from its animated holiday adventure, “Tangled,” which stars the voices of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi in a twist on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Rapunzel.
It has been interesting to see the studio’s approach to “Tangled” after last year’s “The Princess and the Frog” – which was heralded as the savior of traditional, hand-drawn (to a certain extent) animation – didn’t connect with as large an audience as anticipated.
It was speculated that boys were disinterested in “Frog” because of the female focus, so one of the first “Tangled” clips was an action-packed teaser that focused on Flynn (Levi), a thief who ends up in Rapunzel’s bedroom as he flees the authorities. “Here comes the smolder” still makes me chuckle.
Then came the full-length trailer, which brought Rapunzel back into focus. (Don’t want to alienate the girls, after all). This morning, we’re back to Flynn as a new clip mixes much more of the adventure with different samples of the film’s humor. See it here.
A work-in-progress print of “Tangled” has been screening in chunks to different film journalists, and one pundit said we can pencil it in for a Best Animated Feature nomination. (Though with such competition as “Toy Story 3,” “Despicable Me,” “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Illusionist,” to name a few, I’m not sure a nom is such a slam dunk.)
“Tangled” opens on Nov. 24, and should lure plenty of families to the theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday.
