Tom Cruise wanted by director Tony Scott for ‘Top Gun 2’

HollywoodNews.com: During the promotion for his latest actioner “Unstoppable,” Tony Scott has been verifying that he’s in negotiations for Tom Cruise to reprise his role as Maverick in “Top Gun 2.”

“We’ve been talking with Tom definitely,” Scott confirmed to Entertainment Weekly.

This news contradicts recent reports from Vulture which stated that “Top Gun 2” scribe Christopher McQuarrie said, “There is no ‘Top Gun 2’ in which Maverick is not the starring role”.

In addition Cruise’s reps are denying that he’s in contention for “Top Gun 2.”

That would be a pity – Cruise is in desperate need of a domestic hit after falling down with this summer’s action film “Knight & Day” ($76.4 million). In addition, reboots of classic action films (i.e. “Planet of the Apes,” “Star Trek”) are guaranteed blockbusters now.

More than 1/4 of a BILLION dollars ($256,513,036) worldwide is the revenue from Knight & Day. (to date — without DVD sales). This information is generated by box office mojo that tracks all movies. Production cost was $117 million. Let’s say $25 million was spent in advertising (a c onservative amount). That leaves $114,513.036 MILLION DOLLARS PROFIT, which is a healthy profit margin, particularly compared to the many recent movies that barely broke even, or lost money.. Sometimes Americans think its market is the only revenue producing market in the world.
