Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush in first “Pirates: On Stranger Tides” trailer

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: The first official trailer for Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” has arrived online, giving us an extended look at the first “Pirates” sequel to set sail with Johnny Depp in the lead surrounded by a crew of both new and familiar faces.

Yahoo Movies has the exclusive trailer:

Depp returns as Capt. Jack Sparrow, of course. He’s searching for the Fountain of Youth with Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), though they will be joined by feisty Angelica (Penelope Cruz) in a race against Blackbeard (Ian McShane), the pirate “all pirates fear.”

What else is new? Well, the trailer promises mermaids, zombies (zombies?!) and British Red Coats. We’ll see Sparrow on dry land, as Depp’s character traipses through jolly old London (and makes a hasty getaway, according to a quick clip). And who are those two young actors that sort of resemble Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom?

Another new face joining the franchise can be found behind the camera. Rob Marshall, who worked with Cruz on “Nine,” replaces Gore Verbinski in the director’s chair. Though by the look of the trailer, this easily could have been a Verbinski production … which, for “Pirates” fans can be considered a compliment.

“Did everyone see that, because I will not be doing it again,” Depp asks after a particularly explosive dive near the end of the trailer.

Well, unless those rumors of the fifth and sixth “Pirates” films end up being true.

“On Stranger Tides” will be in theaters, in 3D and IMAX, on May 20.
