Toronto critics latest group to praise “Social Network”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: The “Social Network” bandwagon is pretty full. Is there room for Oscar, or will the cart topple before February arrives?

The latest group to heap praise on David Fincher’s Facebook film hails from Canada, where the Toronto Film Critics Association selected “Social Network” as the year’s best film, Fincher as the Best Director, Jesse Eisenberg as Best Actor, Armie Hammer as Best Supporting Actor (or is that “Actors”?), and Aaron Sorkin for Best Screenplay.

So pretty much a sweep.

“We appreciate what it represents in popular American film culture — an intelligent moral drama told from multiple viewpoints with a complex protagonist who is neither hero nor villain,” association president Brian Johnson said in a statement.

The winning women in Toronto were Jennifer Lawrence, named Best Actress for “Winter’s Bone,” and Hailee Steinfeld in support for “True Grit.”

Perhaps the best Tweet posted during this “Social Network” awards run came from HitFix’s Gregory Ellwood, who expressed pity for Oscar bloggers who have to pretend that there’s an actual awards “race” to cover for the next three months.
