Brad Pitt, Sean Penn climb new “Tree of Life” trailer

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: The full trailer for Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” has arrived online, finally giving rabid Malick fans a high-definition teaser to salivate over (so they can stop straining to see the grainy cam version that was posted on YouTube after it was attached to “Black Swan”).

“Tree of Life” tells the story of a young boy raised by a tough father (Brad Pitt) who grows up to be a troubled man (Sean Penn) with emotional problems. But that’s one level of what’s sure to be a deeper spiritual discussion about life, love, survival, and our place in the universe.

This is Malick, after all.

Malick’s supporters have been waiting for “Life” for some time, initially hoping that the film was going to tour the 2010 fall festivals before resigning to the fact that they’d have to wait for Cannes 2011.

But does anyone else out there fear that “Tree of Life” is being set up to fail? There’s no possible way that it can live up to the hype generated by uber-passionate Malick scholars on Internet message boards. We’ll see how it plays out, but I think some of the more eager Malick fans need to dial it back two or three notches.

“Tree of Life” will be in theaters on May 27.
