“Little Fockers” leads “True Grit” heading into holiday weekend

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: It was a big win for “Little Fockers” at the box office on Wednesday as the ensemble comedy – the third in the “Meet the Parents” franchise – topped several newcomers to lead the daily box office and charge into the holiday frame with some momentum.

“Little Fockers” earned an estimated $7.2 million on Wednesday to jog ahead of Joel and Ethan Coen’s “True Grit,” which opened to much better reviews but only $5.5M or the day. Still, pundits say that number for Paramount’s period Western is better than expected.

“The Coen Brothers Western performed above expectations,” writes EW.com, adding that between “Grit” and “TRON,” December “belongs to Jeff Bridges.”

Will “Fockers” hold? Reviews have been brutal, with the comedy claiming only an 11% Fresh grade on Rotten Tomatoes. If word of mouth hurts the film over the weekend, it’s possible that “Grit” – with a stunning 96% Fresh grade – could triumph. It depends how many people want vengeance this holiday season as opposed to laughs. Then again, you’ll find more effective jokes in “Grit” than in “Fockers,” so pick your poison.
