Oprah Winfrey preparing OWN ahead of New Year’s Day launch

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Oprah Winfrey’s media empire is about to expand … again.

Winfrey will launch her latest endeavor, The Oprah Winfrey Network (or OWN), on Saturday, and you’ll be able to witness the launch if you receive the Discovery Health Channel on your cable provider.

It is estimated that 85 million homes will be able to see Winfrey’s new network once it takes over what was once Discovery Health, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“The tricky part, especially if the new network proves popular, will be when cable or satellite companies’ existing contracts with Discovery Communications Inc. expire,” the WSJ reports. “Discovery and Winfrey’s Harpo Inc. production company each own half of the new network, and the goal is to secure significantly higher monthly fees and advertising revenue than Discovery Health currently receives.”

Negotiations are ongoing with cable providers like Time Warner Cable and Mediacom to carry Oprah’s new network. Others like satellite-television providers, like Dish Network, carry Discovery Health but “still need to hammer out a new deal for OWN,” says the WSJ.

What will you see on OWN? The network plans to air more than 20 original series next year. It will carry prime-time talk specials and celebrity programs.

A new year means a new endeavor for Oprah. Will you tune in?

I’m one of many who are not happy at all about this takeover. “Oprah Stole My Favorite Channel, Discovery Health” is a page I created to give a voice to people who cant believe Oprah stole Discovery Health. “Like” it today and express your dislike!

Not just NO! But F&%k NO, I won’t tune in. Discovery Health lost a viewer in me and thousands of others. I refuse to be OWNed.

Hell no! I am so mad that Oprah kicked my favorite channel to the curb! How rude is that???? I do not find Oprah the least bit interesting and I will not be watching.

Honestly Oprah has gone too far! Of all the channels in the world to take over she had to take over one of the few educational ones. I will never watch OWN and honestly I have lost any thing resembling respect for her.

I am so bummed by this takeover of Discovery Health by OWN. I resent that this woman feels she is going to help us by pushing her views and values off onto the rest of.us. As an educated woman with university degrees I am more than capable of making decisions and using the values and morals I was taught by my family,,,I don’t need hers and I really enjoyed even the reruns on Discovery Health! I will not be watching this network.

I won’t see anything on OWN, and NO I will not be tuning in. I don’t watch Oprah now. Why would I watch a whole channel about her?

I am disgusted that OPRAH is taking over the Discovery Health Channel. I love Dr.G and other shows and learn so much from them. I don’t watch OPRAH but if I did I doubt that I would learn anything. She has enough money to buy her own channel. Why buy one that is already established and has a successful following?

Discovery Health had provocative, intelligent and thought-provoking programming; very sad that it will be taken over by the Oprah ego-fest. I will NOT be tuning in!

Sorry, I won’t be watching OWN. I loved all the shows on DHC and now most of them are gone or on a channel I don’t get. Why couldn’t she get her OWN channel instead of taking over my favorite one???

I’m am so dissapointed … Ive been looking for the discovery health channel for the past couple of days and cound’t find it… I have TWC and decided to check TWC and to my surprise discovered the Oprah’s OWN replaced discovery health… How could this be??? I loved Dr. G and its valualbe information in addition to the other educational programs that were on discovery . health… the nerve of Oprah and TWC for letting this happen. I don’t dislike Oprah, but personally I’m not crazy about her. She is too opinionated and wasnt she suppose to be on satellite TV?? What the heck! I say, put Oprah on another channel and bring back Dr G!!!!!!!
