HollywoodNews.com: Between them, they have at least a dozen Emmys and in a few weeks time, will be a combined 190 years old.
But Betty White and Ed Asner, former co-stars on ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ are still in rare form and appearing the TV sitcoms ‘Hot in Cleveland’ and ‘Working Class,’ respectively.
Both were the comedy highlights of a pair of morning panels Wednesday at the TV Critics Association Winter Press Tour at the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena.
Asner, who plays star Melissa Peterman’s neighbor in the new CMT sitcom ‘Working Class,’ sat down and joked: “Did you hear Betty White is in the building? I hope I get to touch her!”
White and her ‘Cleveland’ co-stars had just left the stage moments earlier.
He was also asked was if Miss White was still hot. He said he just had cataracts “but what I see is looking pretty good.”
Asner, a seven-time Emmy winner for ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ and the spinoff Lou Grant as well the miniseries ‘Roots’ and ‘Rich Man, Poor Man,’ was asked where he kept all of his Emmys. He joked that they were on display in a vault near his front door then asked if it was true that another MTM alum, Cloris Leachman had won 8 Emmys.
When told it was true he said: “Bitch!”
Miss White was far more polite during her ‘Cleveland’ session with co-stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick.
Betty turns 89 in two weeks but says she keeps working so hard because “it’s hard 4 me to say no to a job. You spend your career thinking if you say no, they’ll never ask you again. … I don’t think of it as work.”
She has been on a phenomenal role since last year’s Super Bowl when she was featured in a Snickers commercial which led to a successful Facebook campaign to get her on as host of ‘Saturday Night Live.’
“I was all set to say no,” she said of the SNL gig. “I thought I’d be like a fish out if water.”
Instead, she was a ratings smash and won an Emmy for her performance.
Betty is excited that her former boss, Mary Tyler Moore, is guesting on the first new episode of the second season on ‘Cleveland’ when it returns on Jan. 19.
“We haven’t worked together in 33 years,” she said of her longtime friend. “She’s a dynamite lady.”
