Johnny Depp less enthusiastic about potential “Pirates” sequels?

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Could “Pirates 5” be on the horizon?

That as been the rumor ever since Johnny Depp agreed to step back into Capt. Jack Sparrow’s kinky boots for “On Stranger Tides.” One of the theories floating around (and reported on our site months ago) was that Depp would dive right back into the “Pirates” world and film parts five and six back-to-back, completing a second “Pirates” trilogy.

But a Depp quote in the new cover story at EW cools that momentum, slightly, as the actor discusses potential “Pirates” sequels.

“As long as we can put all the puzzle pieces together, I would most definitely consider it,” he said, which is a long way off from greenlighting his involvement.

Depp goes on to tell the magazine that “On Stranger Tides” was a tough shoot, which might be playing into his slight hesitation.

But the reality is that this is a box-office question. Disney – and producer Jerry Bruckheimer – no doubt want to see is audiences flock to a fourth “Pirates” film before moving ahead on a no-doubt-expensive fifth and sixth installment. If “Tides” does “Dead Man’s Chest” money, you can count on Depp swinging through two more “Pirates” before too long.

Until then, we’ve got “On Stranger Tides” to look forward to. It opens on May 20.
