“Madagascar” sequel cages an Oscar winner

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: A third “Madagascar” seemed inevitable, what with the most recent animated adventure with Alex the lion (Ben Stiller) and his zoo mates making more than $600 million worldwide.

Now we know who our stranded animal heroes will face off against in “Madagascar 3.”

Frances McDormand has been cast as the voice of the villain in DreamWorks Animation’s planned sequel, which is slated for a May 18, 2012 release.

The Oscar winner will play a cruel animal-control officer who is tracking Alex, Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith).

The plot will find the zoo creatures once again trying to get home from Africa, but this time getting caught up in a traveling circus.

THR notes that new characters added to the animated ensemble will include “an Italian sea lion, a Russian tiger and a Latina jaguar.”
