Hellcat’s Aly Michalka talks sexy roles and awesome abs!
By Fred Topel
hollywoodnews.com: I’ve got to admit, I was a little star struck meeting Aly Michalka. I’m 33 so I’m not the target audience for “Hellcats,” but I’m so impressed by the cheerleading routines she does that I was in awe when I met her at The CW’s “Kick Ass Women” cocktail party. So I took up a little too much time professing my admiration, which she graciously thanked me for, but then I was able to stammer out a few questions to get an interview with Aly.
Q: So these routines are so impressive, how strong have you gotten with this athletic training?
Aly Michalka: I mean, I already was pretty strong just getting into it. I can bench press at least 100 pounds. So I think that at that point, it’s just about maintaining it and continuing to build your core strength. I feel really confident in any stunt or move or choreographed routine that we are doing.
Q: Which of the routines have been the most challenging for you?
AM: I think the routines that are challenging are like the mambo, the Michael Jackson just because they’re very specific and we really wanted to honor them. The mambo is very classic dance and Michael Jackson is obviously a legend and amazing so it was fun to actually incorporate that into our show in our own fun way.
Q: You have great abs in the Hellcats uniform. How do your abs look in HD?
AM: I think they look good. I mean, if they look good in HD I guess that’s good. I mean, what do they look like in person? HD is like super picky, so I’m happy.
Q: You came from music and now you’re doing movies too. How is this success ride going?
AM: It’s been a progressive build. It hasn’t been like overnight, I haven’t woken up and been like oh wow, I’m on TV and I’m doing a movie. It’s been a long ride so it’s something that feels really earned. There’s a gratitude there for sure.
Q: You played a sexy character in Easy A too. Are you comfortable turning on the heat?
AM: Oh yeah. I think especially if it’s in light of something, I especially love it. I love funny. I love comedy. I’ve always loved it. I feel like with Rhiannon, she was a wild ballsy character and I’d never been able to play a role like that before so I was excited.
Q: I felt bad for her.
AM: She’s so out there.
Q: She was so proud of her boobs.
AM: Yes, like oh no, honey, there’s so much more in life.
Q: I wanted to give her a hug and say, “It’s okay, I like you for who you are.”
AM: I know, I know, I know. Me too.
Q: So I’m a 33-year-old man and I come up to you and say I love “Hellcats.” Are you surprised what fans you have?
AM: Yeah, I get surprised every day. Somebody who’s like 40 will come up and be like, “I love your show” or somebody who’s 10 or 35 or 21. It’s all over the place and I love that. I like that it’s a wide range.
Hellcats returns with new episodes January 25 on The CW.
