Piers Morgan kick starts CNN show with Oprah Winfrey, Ricky Gervais

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Piers Morgan makes his CNN debut tonight, taking over the chair occupied by Larry King for decades.

His first show airs at 9 p.m., and his first guest – Oprah Winfrey – apparently opens up on some closely guarded personal secrets … including a desperate cry for help in her early years.

“I did stupid things like, you know, drinking detergent and all that crazy stuff that you do when you’re trying to get attention, when you’re really just trying to cry for help,” Winfrey reportedly tells Morgan, according to BusinessInsider.com.

It’s a great “get,” a fantastic interview to kick off his run on CNN.

But talking heads already are looking ahead to Morgan’s Thursday night episode in light of what happened last night.

That’s right: Morgan has Ricky Gervais booked for the show.

It was planned in advance, and Morgan could not know how controversially hot Gervais would be after his insult-tossing gig hosting the Golden Globes. Today’s trendy topic revolves around whether or not Gervais went too far. Morgan would be wise to get to the meat of the discussion, an you know we can count on Gervais to answer honestly … and probably hilariously.

Morgan’s other guests for his opening week include George Clooney, Howard Stern, and Condoleezza Rice.
