Few “real” housewives left in Atlanta
By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: With two divorcees, a serial mistress, a would-be widow, and a wedding that almost didn’t happen, Phaedra Parks seemed to be the only “real” Atlanta housewife left on Bravo TV. When the series began in 2008, cast members Nene Leakes, Sheree Whitfield, Lisa Wu-Hartwell, and DeShawn Snow were all married, and Kim Zolciak the lone mistress to a married real estate mogul, the secretive “Big Poppa”. Yet, in the show’s third season, the original housewives have moved on, with most current cast members’ relationship status defying the premise of the show.
Sheree Whitfield’s marriage was the first casualty, having failed early on in a bitter but understated divorce from NFL player Bob Whitfield soon after the first season began. Lisa Wu-Hartwell and DeShawn Snow left the cast before season three, with Snow divorcing her NBA athelete husband, Eric Snow, soon after. Kandi Burruss was slated to marry fiancé AJ Jewell at the end of season two, but Jewell met an untimely death during a strip club brawl in 2009. And, in the current season, Nene Leaks revealed a planned divorce to her philandering husband of fourteen years, Gregg, with whom she has an 11-year old son.
The season will end next week with an episode that follows new cast member Cynthia Bailey through her impending nuptials with fiancé Peter Thomas. Though building tensions between the couple and Bailey’s cold feet found episode trailers implying that Thomas would be left at the altar, sources including the New York Post reported that the wedding proceeded as planned in July 2010.
That leaves Phaedra Parks, season three’s other new cast member, whose husband, Apollo Nida served five years of an eighteen-year prison sentence for racketeering. Despite the scrutiny endured by Parks due to Nida’s checkered past, she and Cynthia Bailey Thomas are the only remaining Atlanta Housewives sporting rings.
