Oprah’s big secret: a long lost sibling

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Viewers were hardly surprised when Oprah Winfrey said last week that she would use today’s Oprah Show to reveal a hidden family secret. The billionaire media mogul’s penchant for grand gestures combined with a history of candor about painful events in her life left few viewers shocked at Winfrey’s revelation: the star has a long, lost half-sister.
Calling it the “miracle of all miracles”, Winfrey shared the story of how her half-sister, Patricia was given up for adoption some fifty years ago, by their mother, who was afraid that she would never get off welfare if she kept the child. At the time, Winfrey was eight years old and living with her father. The two discovered each other when Patricia embarked on a search for her birth mother at her own childrens’ behest. Winfrey never knew about her mother, Vernita Lee’s, pregnancy. When questioned, Vernita Lee said she never told Winfrey because “it was a terrible thing for [her] to do”.
Also of note is the fact that Winfrey’s sister Patricia is reported to have known of their familial relation since 2007. Unlike other members of Winfrey’s family, Patricia chose to pursue a relationship with Winfrey privately, seeking no financial gain nor speak ing to the press.
