Steven Tyler: American Idol’s new loose cannon

Steven Tyler

By Kim Palacios For shows with celebrity judges, a single zany personality can catapult a franchise to worldwide success. After a confused ninth season that saw comedienne Ellen Degeneres try (and fail) to fill the shoes of American Idol’s most notorious loose cannon, Paula Abdul, the show is back on track with the arrival of Steven Tyler.

The Ellen debacle taught a valuable lesson: people might like funny, but they go bananas for crazy. Steven Tyler’s status as a rock legend combined with his quickly-growing reputation for humorous outbursts and non-sequiturs may make him the best American Idol judge yet.

“Breathe a little breath of fresh air! Slap that baby on the ass and call me Christmas!” exclaimed Tyler at one point during episode three. He is also becoming known for random voice riffs (complete with high notes) and singing along with contestants. Yet, for all his sometimes Ozzy-esque antics, Tyler is as lovable as he is nutty. This may make him American Idol’s saving grace.

Together the judges this season have a really great vibe between them and I can’t get enough of it. I especially love Steven Tyler (reason I watch) but am impressed with Jennifer Lopez. I like Randy with Steven and Jennifer. While I valued the honesty of Simon I prefer this group as they are all artists and are “keeping it real” in a fun way. I’m more than impressed. LOVE IT.

Steven brought all the fun to American Idol, J-Lo is doing okay too. I think they made a pretty good choice this time, choosing the judges.
